When to trim a cedar hedge

A cedar hedge is a great and more economical strategy than fencing to keep your home private from the neighborhood. However, a cedar hedge needs annual trimming. Put your projects in good hands with Emondage Magog and you will be sure to have a hedge that will be the envy of your neighbors!

The trimming of a cedar hedge is only necessary when the first buds appear. The time between July 1st and September 15th is the ideal time to prune cedars. It is not advisable to prune during hot weather or heat waves.

Annual trimming is highly desirable for a full, healthy looking cedar hedge. However, since the time frame for this is quite short, we recommend that you make an appointment well in advance. It is recommended to trim cedars between July and September. If necessary, we can also agree with you on a predetermined annual period to maintain your hedge. This will give you peace of mind knowing that the trimming will be done in a timely manner.

Successful hedge trimming

In the case of small and immature cedars, our experts only trim the side part. When your hedge is big enough, it will be possible to trim the top as well.

It is highly recommended to trim leaving two thirds of the new growth in place. Sometimes we can go more drastic and remove up to half of it. But if this limit is exceeded, it is the development of the plant that suffers.

Training size

Do you know what training size is? This technique allows to give a tree a particular configuration, which requires to start as early as possible.

Also, starting at the beginning of a tree's growth is strongly advised. Here is why. First, we have several years to adjust the structural flaws of the tree. Then, the healing process left by the cuts lasts for a period of time that depends on the size of the branch's diameter. The longer this period takes, the more likely it is that problems will arise. While a training size started when the tree is young enough protects it from many problems.

Our experts are committed to hearing your needs before proceeding with any training pruning.

As for fruit trees, the objective of training pruning is to bring them to a production that is as abundant as possible. Our experts have a high level of know-how concerning the Quebec varieties of fruit trees. They will know how to trim a tree according to its type and maturity level.
